Stages of Formwork Contractors
There are four main stages that need to be completed by all Formwork companies
Get in TouchBefore you consider pouring concrete, having a plan is essential. This involves designing the slab and selecting suitable materials. A carefully prepared plan can save both time and money over time. It's similar to following a recipe; if you omit steps, the result could be a disaster in the kitchen!
The next step after the design is complete is to prepare the formwork. This means measuring and shaping the materials to the correct size. The formwork must be robust and tightly secured since it will hold the weight of the liquid concrete.
It's time to pour the concrete! You should carefully fill the formwork to avoid air bubbles and uneven surfaces. This part requires precision, just like pouring a glass of water without spilling. A smooth and consistent pour leads to an even slab.
After the concrete is poured, it requires time to harden and cure. It must be kept moisture and at the proper temperature during this phase. Once the curing process is complete, we take away the formwork. If the formwork is installed correctly, you will have a well-formed slab.

Formwork is an integral component in the construction industry, enabling the creation of custom concrete structures with precision and effectiveness. By pouring the concrete into these pre-built forms, construction teams can swiftly and accurately shape the material to the specifications required for a given project, be it a sturdy foundation, a load-bearing pillar, or a decorative feature.
The versatility of formwork allows builders to adapt the molds to a wide range of sizes, angles, and designs, granting them the flexibility to bring their visions to life without being limited by standard, pre-fabricated concrete pieces. Furthermore, the formwork safeguards the fresh concrete from the elements as it cures, ensuring a strong, durable final product that meets all structural and aesthetic requirements. This temporary scaffolding system is an essential part of the construction process, empowering builders to construct custom concrete elements efficiently and with a high degree of precision while also accelerating the overall project timeline.

Types of Formwork Different projects require specific solutions to suit their unique demands. Below are the main types of formwork we provide:
1. Timber Formwork: A traditional and versatile option, timber formwork is easy to assemble and customize. It is often used for smaller or more complex structures.
2. Plywood Formwork: Lightweight and durable, plywood formwork offers a smooth finish and is widely used for walls, slabs, and beams.
3. Steel Formwork: Known for its strength and reusability, steel formwork is ideal for projects requiring high precision and uniformity, particularly large-scale infrastructure projects.
4. Plastic Formwork: Lightweight and water-resistant, plastic formwork is easy to clean and reuse, making it a cost-effective choice for repetitive structures.
5. Aluminium Formwork: Aluminium formwork systems are lightweight, durable, and suitable for high-rise construction due to their quick assembly and dismantling features.
6. Slipform: This method is used for continuous concrete pouring, often employed in vertical structures such as towers, silos, and chimneys.
Formwork, shuttering, and steel fixing are essential components in construction. Shuttering involves creating molds using plywood, timber, or metal panels to contain the concrete within the desired area and dimensions. Our company carefully assembles precise formwork through our experienced shuttering team.
The installation of reinforcing steel bars, or rebars, within the formwork is known as steel fixing. These rebars add strength and durability to reinforced concrete structures. Alunia Construction meticulously positions and secures the rebars, ensuring adherence to engineering specifications and the final design developed by our company.
The seamless coordination between formwork, shuttering, and steel fixing is crucial in maintaining the structural integrity of reinforced concrete foundations, walls, and basements.
Since the 1990s, different types of formwork have been continuously improving, with ongoing innovations that have made the construction industry more efficient. Each formwork system is designed to meet the specific requirements of a construction project. The main formwork types used in construction are system column formwork, horizontal panels, slip form, jump form, vertical panel systems, and permanent formwork. The construction industry values speed and efficiency, so modern formwork systems are engineered to maintain accuracy, minimize waste, and comply with health and safety regulations.
Two Key Factors for Formwork
All formwork must account for two key factors: the pour rate and lateral pressure. The rate of pour refers to the speed at which concrete is poured into the vacant form. Wet-poured concrete is hefty, around 150 pounds (68 kg) per cubic foot. As the concrete rises, it puts sideways pressure on the inner sides of the mold. If too much concrete is added at once, and the fasteners are not strong enough to hold the pressure, the wet concrete could break through the mold. It is essential to allow the concrete poured at the bottom to set and gain adequate strength before adding more concrete. Stamaty suggests a pouring rate of 4 to 5 feet (1.2 to 1.5 meters) per hour as a general rule for most formwork systems. This means a 12-foot-tall (3.7-meter) wall would take up to three hours to pour completely.
Our Formwork company operates in various regions, including London, Sussex, Kent, Surrey, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, and Hampshire. We can work in other areas if the project is substantial enough.
Timber, Metal, Slab, Column, Concrete.
To build any concrete structure, it's essential to use a formwork or mold to achieve the desired shape and ensure safety.
When working with regular cement in typical conditions, Walls, columns, and other vertical forms can typically be taken down after 24 to 48 hours. If fast-drying cement is used, this time frame can be reduced to just 12 hours. For concrete slabs, the forms can usually be removed after 3 days, and supports can be removed after 2 weeks.
Formwork is the general term for the process of shaping concrete. Shuttering refers to the temporary molds that support the wet concrete until it hardens and cures. Regardless of their scale, various projects typically require both formwork and shuttering techniques.
Formwork Contractors provides our formwork services across all 33 London boroughs, including Camden, Greenwich, Lewisham, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Wandsworth, Westminster, Barking and Dagenham, Barnet, Bexley, Brent, Bromley, Croydon, Hackney, Hammersmith and Fulham, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, Lambeth, Ealing, Enfield, Kingston upon Thames, Merton, Newham, Redbridge, Richmond upon Thames, Sutton, Waltham Forest, Haringey, Harrow, Havering, Hillingdon, and Hounslow.
Like any construction activity, formwork operations involve certain risks. Identifying and mitigating these hazards is crucial for a safe and efficient project.
Material Failure: Poor-quality materials or improper assembly can lead to collapses. We use only high-grade materials and follow strict quality checks.
Worker Injuries: Lifting and handling heavy formwork components can result in injuries. We prioritize worker training and provide safety gear to minimize risks.
Improper Striking: Premature removal of formwork can compromise the concrete’s strength. Our team follows strict timelines and industry standards for striking.
Environmental Conditions: Factors like rain, wind, and extreme temperatures can affect the integrity of formwork. We account for these variables during planning and execution.
1. The formwork should be strong enough to withstand all loads securely.
2. The formwork should be rigid enough to maintain its proper shape.
3. The joints in the formwork should be tightly sealed to prevent any leakage of cement grout.
4. The construction of the formwork should allow for the removal of various parts in the desired sequence without damaging the concrete.
5. The material used for the formwork should be inexpensive, readily available, and reusable.
6. The formwork should be set up accurately to the desired line, and the levels should create a flat, even surface.
7. The formwork should be as lightweight as possible. 8. The formwork should rest on a stable, firm base.
This typically involves the following operations:
